PROFILE

TECTONICS is a London based architect's practice, founded in 2001 by director Bernard Tulkens.

The studio draws on experience gained since 1988 on a variety of high quality developments in England and abroad for practices such as David Chipperfield Architects and Kohn Pedersen Fox.

The practice offers a high level of experience and skills. Services offered cover all stages of a project: formulation of concept, spatial planning and organisation, visualisation, right through to detail design, construction and completion.

The practice is involved in cultural and community buildings. Recent projects include a gallery space for Imperial College London, a Community Centre in Shoreditch and Boundary Estate Playground. We also have experience in residential projects ranging from urban infill to bespoke alterations to traditional London housing stock.

APPROACH

'Tectonics' comes from 'Tecton' meaning carpenter in ancient Greek. It refers to both the materiality of construction and to land formation, the plates of the earth.

Our motivation is the improvement of life for the user by the creation of inspiring space. We are interested in light, clarity of form and space and the materiality of construction in the making of architecture.

Tectonics also takes inspiration from the context of each project, most often the city fabric, and the relationship between the buildings and the city spaces: The work is not only about architecture, but also landscape and cityscape. We like to work with other trades and aim at involving a more diverse range of people and expertise in technology, environmental and materials into the making of buildings.
